Celebrating Success: IOBZ Graduation Day 2023

The Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe (IOBZ) recently celebrated a momentous occasion as they bid farewell to the accomplished Class of 2023 for the Bankers Diploma. The event was held on Friday the 8^th  of December 2023 at The Golden Conifer Venue.  In attendance were the 47 students that graduated with the IOBZ Bankers Diploma, members of the IOBZ Council and Education Committee amongst other guests. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr Guvamatanga, was the Guest of Honour. Amidst an atmosphere brimming with pride, hope and anticipation, graduates, faculty members, families, and esteemed guests came together to commemorate the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

In his keynote address, Mr Guvamatanga commended the graduands for overcoming many challenges on the way, including juggling one’s studies with other social obligations, such as family and job obligations. In his congratulatory speech he  quoted  one motivational  speaker who said,  “It is not your aptitude, but your attitude that determines your altitude”. He described banking as an evolving industry that is crucial in the economy. Of note, he emphasized that professional bankers are a key input to economic development and wealth creation in terms of providing resources and informed advice and guidance with respect to investment channels and options. Membership of this esteemed profession are knowledgeable, skilled, and passionate individuals who seek to contribute to its growth.

As the graduates donned their robes and mortarboards, the air buzzed with excitement and achievement. The ceremony served as a testament to the unwavering commitment of each graduate to excel in the dynamic and demanding field of banking and finance. With Diplomas in hand, they stand ready to embark on new journeys, equipped with the knowledge, skills and expertise gained from their time at IOBZ.

The importance of an IOBZ qualification cannot be overstated, especially in today’s rapidly evolving financial landscape. In an industry where excellence is not merely desirable but imperative, IOBZ graduates emerge as leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of banking and finance with confidence and proficiency. The Guest of Honour  implored the Institute to continue to transform and align its mandate to the needs of the industry in order to better meet the expectations of the more discerning customer and marketplace. For that to happen, the Institute needs to be dynamic and innovative, interact meaningfully with similar institutions for benchmarking, and explore opportunities for collaboration and strategic partnerships with other professional organisations, academic institutions, and industry leaders.

The IOBZ curriculum is meticulously designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of banking principles, financial management, risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and emerging trends in the industry. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, graduates are empowered to tackle real-world challenges and drive innovation within their respective organizations.

Furthermore, an IOBZ qualification serves as a hallmark of credibility and professionalism, distinguishing individuals as competent and trustworthy professionals within the banking sector. Employers recognize the value of IOBZ graduates, acknowledging their rigorous training and commitment to excellence. We should always remember that banking and, more broadly, finance is a business of trust.

The bankers have a fiduciary responsibility and duty to protect the integrity and reputation of the banking system, to underwrite continuing public trust and confidence in the financial system.
